Founded in 1995, Dovetail Solar and Wind has more than 21 years experience in renewable energy system design, installation and green building. If you are considering a solar or wind system for an existing home, business, non-profit or farm, or if you would like to incorporate it into new construction, we would be delighted to help you determine the best, most cost effective options for your project.
Dovetail is one of the oldest, largest and most experienced renewable energy firms in the Ohio area. We are one of the few that provide all three major technologies: solar electric, solar thermal and wind.
We minimize your project risk with our design and implementation processes. We have developed and refined these completing over 475 system installations across all regions of Ohio and surrounding states. They total more than 19,100,000 watts (>19.1 Megawatts) of solar and wind systems. That's over 69,500 solar modules! Our employees are experienced implementing net metering and off-grid systems, and interfacing with all the major utility companies. We excel at implementing 200 kW and larger solar systems, having successfully built more than 21.
Dovetail has five Ohio locations (Athens, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo), and an office in Brighton, Michigan to support our clients. We are planning additional offices in the region. We install in and service all of Ohio, southern Michigan, northern Kentucky, Indiana, western New York, western Pennsylvania, and the northern half of West Virginia. Call us to discuss a project in another location.
Dovetail is customer focused and mission minded, not money driven. Honesty, integrity, and environmental stewardship are at the core of our values. We design your system to be high performing, clean, safe, low maintenance and durable. We utilize top quality components from suppliers that have both a proven track record of performance, and a commitment to support what they sell so that your system will work properly and reliably for many years.
We consciously buy most of our components from USA manufacturers - a number of whom are located in Ohio and Michigan. This embodies our sustainable business practices, lowers our (and your) carbon footprint, as well as, supports and grows green jobs in our region.
Dovetail is a licensed electrical contractor in Ohio (License #29397), and West Virginia (License #WV050186) . We also have licensed electricians for several surrounding states. Dovetail is an Approved Solar Electric Installer for the PA Sunshine Program. We participate in the Michigan DTE SolarCurrents and the Consumers Energy EARP programs. In addition, we have a licensed Ohio Professional Engineer on our design team who is able to perform structural analysis on buildings and produce Ohio stamped drawings for permitting. We ensure that all our systems meet or exceed NEC electrical code, safety codes, as well as, comply with all Federal, state and local building codes, requirements and regulations. We can provide assistance in resolving zoning issues, such as applying for a BZA variance.
We employ a safety manager focused on ensuring we and our subcontractors meet or exceed all OHSA regulations, and employ best practices for a safe and healthy work environment. We maintain a Drug Free Work Environment. All of installation crews are goaled to obtain a minimum OSHA 10 safety certification, with an expanding subset certified at OSHA 30. All of our sales team are also OSHA 10 certified.
Dovetail Solar and Wind is committed to professional system designs and installations that comply with all applicable codes. We are proud to have a number of nationally certified installers working for us. Matt Bennett, Jeff Bintz, Dave Leahy, Gabe Schnabel, and Daniel Young are all NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installation Professionals™. We have a number of additional employees that have earned the NABCEP Entry Level Certificate™. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practioners (NABCEP) is the national certification organization for professional installers in the field of renewable energy. NABCEP certifies individuals, not companies so Dovetail is not implying any endorsement or certification by NABCEP of our firm.
Daniel Young and Gabe Schnable are also NABCEP Certified Solar Thermal Installers™.
Dovetail employees regularly participate in continuing education. The two employees pictured at the left attended John Wiles seminar in Michigan on the latest electrical codes for photovoltaic systems. John is a pioneer in PV electrical code issues, and is a nationally recognized expert in designing safe code compliant systems.
In addition to NABCEP certifications, Matt Bennett is a Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA) Certified PV Systems Integrator/Installer, and a Factory Certified Installer of Uni-Solar Field-Applied PV Laminate roofing systems.
Matthew Bennett, with assistance from other Dovetail technical staff, regularly teach a week long Solar Photovoltaics design and installation class at the Hocking College Energy Institute, which is a part of Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.
We also teach solar installation classes at Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio. We have provided systems to support renewable energy and sustainability instruction at colleges across Ohio, including Baldwin Wallace College, Cincinnati State Technical College, Cuyahoga Community College, Sinclair College, Zane State, and Oregon Career and Technical Center.
